“Thou Shall Not Steal:" Creating Consciousness Among School Community
by Alex Binzen
At least four people have been stolen from in this year. Greta Binzen and Ben Hayslett lost 80$ of senior gift fundraising which was going to be given back to the school by the seniors. The money was in Greta’s cubby, visibly showing in a see-through container. Aoife lost 25$ from her bag, hanging in the senior hallway. Abby Levy lost 20$, which was in her wallet, in her locker. Most recently, Quinn Thomashow had 30$ stolen from her wallet.
In response to this issue, we in The Yurt Alert brainstormed some solutions. None were particularly good. But we still interviewed 55 students and faculty members about the possibility of having locks on the lockers and we got some interesting results. 20 people said that they would be in support of getting locks on the lockers. 35 people were against having locks. This is closer than I expected, I assumed that far more people would be against locks than they actually were.
There is no easy solution to the stealing problem, if the culprit turned himself in, then the problem would be solved for the moment, but it would probably come back stronger. Some kind of lasting solution is necessary for the school to go back to a completely trusting environment.
Here’s hoping that solution arrives soon.
